Jenni + Seth: Wedding in Laguna Beach, CA

Smallest wedding I’ve ever shot, right here, right now! Jenni and Seth opted to smallope– my made up word for a combo of elope + small wedding. Even though I had a gigantic wedding myself, photographing this bite-sized celebration was seriously rad. The bride and groom are friends-of-friends of mine, whose wedding I shot several years back, and I was over the moon to get to shoot at the stunning Heisler Park in Laguna Beach, less than a mile from my high school! Swoon. After their religious wedding ordinance in the Newport Beach LDS Temple (one of my favorite places in the world!), Jenni and Seth exchanged vows and rings at the Gazebo in Heisler Park and we shot a few rolls of film down on the beach in the June gloom (that came early in the middle of May). ALSO: if you follow my Instagram, you saw my post last night about this gown having a wild story. Jenni’s good friend Sara is the boss behind the lovely wedding dress company Illume Gowns, and she handmade Jenni’s dress, the first one of the collection ever worn. Lo and behold, the US Mail lost it in transit during its shipment to Jenni, and, being a wizard (not to mention nine months pregnant), Sara recreated the dress two weeks before the wedding. Jenni tried it on two days before her wedding and had next-day alterations done, et voila! All’s well that ends in a jaw-dropping wedding dress, right? However, if you’re reading this, Postmaster General, you are not off the hook.

These photographs were made on Kodak Portra 400 film through my Mamiya 645Pro.

Three cheers for Jones soda, especially because Jenni’s maiden name is Jones. Aww. And three more cheers for small weddings. The best kind, I say. If you’re getting married, eloping, smalloping… drop me a note. I would be thrilled to meet you and work on your wedding with you. Here’s how to reach me: this form, a good old fashioned email, or ringing/texting. XO!

Kristina + Teddy Engaged: Venice, CA

These beautiful blonde people are getting married in a few weeks! Shooting their engagement photos and getting to hang out with them for a little while was just another reminder of why I love my job. High school sweethearts + California charm = pretty dang cute engagement session. I shot these pictures of Teddy and Kristina at the Venice Canals in Venice, CA on my Mamiya 645 with Kodak Portra 400 film (as usual).

Like I’ve said a hundred times before, meeting and photographing people like this is a huge part of the reason why I love working in this industry. Good people are everywhere. And these two were so interested to hear about what I do and how I do it that it made me even more motivated to keep at it. The way I see it, loving your job is a huge privilege, and I feel pretty dang lucky to be running this wild one-woman show. Can’t wait to shoot their wedding in September — keep your eyes peeled for more photos. And if you’re tying the knot, I’d be thrilled to photograph your day (but only if you love good food and hate flashmob YouTube marriage proposals). Drop me a note anytime by clicking RIGHT HERE or emailing me at: alexsteelephoto@gmail.com

Brittany & Brett: Coto de Caza, CA Wedding

My sister-in-law Brittany got married to our new favorite in-law, Brett, this past fall, and all I can say is WOW, do these two have the best family ever :) I loved being their wedding photographer, and they were such good sports about having a giant pregnant lady follow them around with a camera all day! When I first met Brit, I was her brother’s nervous girlfriend who really wanted to impress his family and she (and her identical twin sister!) had just gotten their learners’ permits. Brett and Brittany got married in the Newport Beach LDS Temple, where Nate and I got married, and then had lunch at the same In-N-Out we went to for lunch after our wedding! Swoon. Such great memories.

These photos were made using Kodak Portra 400 film and a Mamiya 645 pro.

Turley Family: Disneyland!

Disneyland!

This family’s favorite place, thus the perfect location for their family photos!

Meg reached out to me through Instagram last fall, which sent me over the moon with happiness, because Instagram is my favorite. And so is Disneyland. I’m always up for a good excuse to take my people to this marvelous place! Eleanor and Lucy played with their dad (and my brother — we celebrated his 12th birthday there!) while I shot a few rolls for the Turleys. I think we should make this a tradition, it was so much fun.

Welcome Baby Lucy

008

Three weeks ago, Baby Lucy joined the Steele family! She is a perfect little peach and I am absolutely over the moon and in love with this precious baby girl. Little Eleanor is really blossoming as an important little big sister and I’m so looking forward to photographing these two throughout their childhood. We are so very tired and so very happy. Welcome my sweet Lucy Loop.

Sarah + Shawn Engaged: Dana Point, CA

My little sister is engaged! We shot these in our hometown about a week after Shawn proposed to Sarah, and they were such good sports letting me coach (boss!) them through the session. These photos are all shot on Kodak Portra 400 film with my Mamiya 645. We wanted to shoot somewhere with beautiful greenery and a charming feeling, so Sarah’s pick to go to the St. Regis Monarch Beach golf course was the perfect choice. The light was so beautiful and it’s not hard to see how happy these two make each other. I can’t wait for their wedding this spring!

Bunker Family: Riley Wilderness Park, Orange County, CA

Alright.

This family.

This is one of my favorite families on earth. Vanessa and Derek are dear friends of ours from college, and we all kind of grew up in the same neck of the woods in Orange County. This session is one of my best all year. From the beautiful fall light to the obvious best-friendship between these three, it really couldn’t have been better. That sweet little Sadie is cute enough to munch, too. She was a pro at “if you’re happy and you know it,” which is definitely one I need to teach E (who hates being photographed, not unlike her mama)! We shot these at Riley Wilderness Park in Coto de Caza, CA. It happened to be the same night as homecoming, so only about a hundred high school kids joined us, but I’m pretty sure we didn’t get a single one in a photo, magically. And without further adieu…

Cooley family: Three Arch Bay, Laguna Beach, CA

Diana and Logan are such a kind family, and I was super excited to work with them. My first Instagram blind date! Diana reached out to me after seeing some of my work and we had the best time shooting at my favorite beach in California, Three Arch Bay. Their little Gemma is a sweet pea! These photos were all shot on color Kodak film — it’s so exciting for me to work in my favorite medium and have clients who really trust me to do my thing. I couldn’t be happier with the way these photos came out. These three are absolutely beautiful and their happiness seeps through the images. I’m so thankful for clients like these. Thank you, Cooley family!

The Jergensen family had me over to their home a few weeks after I photographed their adoption story on the night their new baby was born. He is such a special little guy and their story is really incredible. Liz and Jeremy are so inspiring to me and I was very moved as I documented these little moments of them with their kids. You can tell how excited C and E are to have a baby brother in the house! I made these photographs using Kodak film on my two most beloved film cameras (a Yashica Mat 124G from my college professor and my first ever film camera, a Leica M6).

If you’d like to make some photographs of your family at home, I’d be thrilled to work with you. Send me a note through this link or write me an email directly at alexsteelephoto@gmail.com to get more information and to book your session. I’m available through the end of 2015 in Los Angeles and Orange County, and I’ll be starting family sessions again in February 2016 after I have my baby. Let’s work together! XO
